'Just carnage': Two women charged after beach party gets out of hand

About 3000 people were at the party at Little Bay, south of Maroubra, and more were arriving when police were called just before 3pm.

It took officers from five different command centres two-and-a half hours to break up the party, which was in a designated alcohol-free zone.

In video footage of the aftermath of the party, police can be seen pushing a couple of women who fall to the ground. Officers also used capsicum spray on the revellers, a police spokeswoman confirmed, and paramedics were called to decontaminate those affected.

Little Bay resident Mark Rear told Seven News it was "just carnage".

"People were just throwing beer bottles and everything, the cops were getting into it with the pepper spray; it was just crazy," he said.

"Weirdest thing I've ever seen at Little Bay."

Videos from the scene posted online show dozens of people in Santa hats drinking, singing and dancing to loud music.

"Unfortunately whilst waiting for some public transport a number of beer bottles were actually thrown at police and as a result two female persons were arrested and those matters are now before the court," Commander Karen McCarthy said.

"Police deployed appropriate tactics in order to deal with the alcohol fuelled violence and bring the matter safely under control."

Mr Rear said police were just pushing the thousands of young people along from the beach, but the mood switched when the officers brought out the pepper spray.

"It was like night and day, they turned pretty ugly pretty quick - both parties," he said.

"It wasn't very nice at all."

British backpacker Stephen Minshaw, who was injured, said police started hitting the party-goers with batons. He told Seven News he thought the force was unnecessary because they were not going to resist police.

"We're backpackers ... so, I don't get why police need to use force to be, like, trying to hit us," he said.

Two police officers were hit with bottles and injured while they were trying to disperse the large crowd, police alleged.

Both officers were treated for minor injuries at the scene, with one officer suffering a minor cut to the right side of his head.

Two women were arrested and taken to Maroubra police station. A 23-year-old woman was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and a 25-year-old woman was charged with assault officer in execution of duty.

They were both granted conditional bail and are due to appear at Waverley Local Court on January 31.

On Thursday, Randwick City Council called Little Bay one of its "secret" beaches in a Facebook post prompting people to visit.

"Well protected from large coastal swells making it perfect for swimming and snorkelling, and its golden sands are popular with families," the council wrote.

After the impromptu party, the council posted to Twitter to thank council workers "who cleared 40 bags of rubbish including broken bottle in just a few hours".

Last week, Eastern Beaches police also took to Facebook to post a warning about alcohol-free zones at all local beaches.

Randwick City Council had introduced tighter alcohol restrictions for Christmas and anyone who was caught risked a maximum fine of $2200, police said
