THE Hawkesbury Saints Junior AFL Club have asked people to try something different in the new year and take up the sport of Aussie rules football.
The club had six boys teams in 2017 and one girls team, and is hoping to have more, particularly girls teams, playing in 2018.
“We're just looking to grow our numbers,” club president Andrew Morgan said.
The club has Auskick teams, with players aged five years able to play, all the way up to under-18s.
Morgan said the Saints did not have a culture of winning at all costs, and the the club was a place where children could come to develop their sporting ability, as well as life skills.
“Winning is a great reward for hard work but it is not the be all and end all,” he said.
“Junior sport should be about providing a fun day of play and working as a team.
“We try to instill some life skills for kids while they play football and we think that is a good thing.”
Morgan said the club had fully qualified coaches for every team.
“The coaches are committed to player development that will enhance their experience in sport and set them up for life,” he said.
Morgan also pointed out in 2018 the NSW Government provide a $100 rebate for children playing sport.
The Active Kids program will give parents a voucher that can be used for registration costs or to cover the cost of participation in sport.
