John Folau finished his last season with the Parramatta Eels thinking he would take a year off from rugby league.

The 23-year-old Kenthurst resident made his mark with the Parramatta Eels in 2015 and scored four tries in his first five matches.

Off contract with the Eels at the end of last season, Folau was ready to take a break until Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles Intrust Super Premiership head coach Steven Hales made contact.

“I was going to take a year off for family reasons, I was thinking of joining a club and then Halesy rang me up and I decided to come down and have a run,” he said.

The pair previously worked together at Parramatta, when Hales was an assistant coach for the Eels under-20s team.

The younger brother of Wallabies fullback Israel Folau, John regularly plays on the wing and centre but enjoyed playing in the back row towards the end of last year.

Folau will line up with a few of his former teammates who also have NRL experience in Jacob Loko and Vai Toutai.

Although he grew up in Campbelltown, Blacktown holds a special place for him after going to Patrician Brothers Blacktown for his last two years of school.

“It’s like coming back and playing for the club,” Folau said.

“There is a lot of talent coming out of these areas and it’s good to come back and play at a club like this, especially with the squad that Halesy’s got here. Hopefully we go pretty well next year.”
