A local cop and animal welfare volunteer have been praised for their work and compassion after a joey tragically lost her mum at East Kurrajong recently.
Local resident Di Smith called animal welfare service WIRES and local police after coming across a Kangaroo on East Kurrajong Road on Sunday November 12, which appeared to have been involved in an accident and had sadly lost her leg.
Carrying a small Joey, Ms Smith said she felt distressed and helpless for the animal that was clearly suffering from her injuries.
Soon after a General Duties Team Leader was called to the incident, as well as a volunteer from WIRES.
Due to the Kangaroo’s injuries a decision was made to have the officer use his firearm to euthanize the suffering mother.
Due to the compassion shown by the officer at the scene and the comfort he provided Ms Smith throughout he ordeal, a decision was made to name the Joey after him, ‘Andrew’, which was later changed to Andrea when they discovered the Joey was a girl.
Chief Inspector Sims, Duty Officer at Hawkesbury Local Area Command said their crews were called to many varying jobs within the Command, and praised the officer for his work.
“The way our Sergeant carried out his duties in this matter reflect that police not only perform a role in law and order, but also to assist with tasks that require quick decision making. It is pleasing to know that this doe was put out of the pain and suffering as humanely as possible.” Chief Inspector Sims said.
A spokesperson for WIRES said Andrea the joey was doing well under the care of one of their local volunteers. She along with Ms Smith hoped that through sharing this experience it would encourage drivers who may have an accident with wildlife to check on the condition of the animal.
“We receive a lot of calls this time of year to help young orphaned animals like this joey,” the spokesperson said.
“Please, if anyone hits or injures any type of animal whether it be dog, cat or wildlife whilst driving, please stop and check on the animals condition,” Ms Smith said.
