Crews battle ‘escalating’ fire inside St Marys recycling depot

Fire crews are on the scene of an “escalating” blaze at a metal recycling depot in St Marys.

It’s believed the fire broke out just before 2pm on Thursday afternoon, when a large pile of cars stored in the facility caught alight.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said 12 crews had arrived at the Christie Street depot, and more than 80 firefighters were on the scene.

The spokesman said the inferno had been contained to one pile of vehicles, which was being separated by heavy machinery.

An aerial pumper was used to help control the blaze.

The spokesperson said it was estimated the depot held about 500 tonnes of scrap metal.

It’s unclear how the fire began.

There have so far been no reports of injuries.

More to come.
