Recycling and sustainability will be the main focus for kids at Kellyville Village these school holidays.
A fun and interactive workshop program, Waste Warriors aims to teach and inspire primary school children on the importance of creating a sustainable future.
Waste Warriors project co-ordinator Simon Andrews said children would be inspired to adopt sustainable practices by being involved in fun and creative activities.
“The program aims to create action in kids by offering them engaging activities and useful tips, designed specifically for young and eager minds,” he said.
“We want kids to walk away feeling like they are Waste Warriors and they can make a difference.”
Mr Andrews says it’s important to teach children about being environmentally-friendly.

“Kids are eager and want to be involved, but often we [adults] don’t give them ideas and actions they can do.
“Environmental sustainability is a complex issue, but it can also be very simple and actionable and part of everyday life. Kids understand this and they understand the importance of changing behaviours now to protect the future – their future!”
The program runs over six weeks and includes three workshops – Waste Warriors puppet-making, Waste Warriors set-making and Waste Warriors puppet show weekend.
In the first workshop, kids will create a Waste Warrior puppet using recycled materials commonly found around the home or school.
Participants will have the opportunity to enter their puppets into an online competition where the public vote on their favourite puppet. The most popular puppets will then star in the Waste Warriors puppet show in October.
As an added incentive for the six surrounding primary schools, Kellyville Village will award one lucky school a $2500 cash prize for the school that has the most attendees over the duration of the first puppet-making workshop.
