THE Courier is giving away a copy of the Colo Shire Family History Group’s new publication on the history of Belmont, now used as St John of God Hospital at North Richmond.
The launch of the book, called ‘From Heartache to Healing – the Story of Belmont’ compiled by Carolynne Cooper, was held on site on Sunday, September 17. Hospital director of mission Cathy Scott hosted the launch on behalf of the hospital, with morning tea provided by staff.
More than 60 guests enjoyed a short tour of the building and the grounds. Guests included members of the Drury family, who had lived in the gatehouse, and Joan Mullins (nee Shepherd) who lived at Belmont in her younger days. Unfortunately Marie Charley (widow of Philip Charley IV) was unable to attend due to a fall.
The book includes chapters on its history by Chris Tobin, Neil Renaud, Prof. Ian Jack, and Ian Irwin, covering the site from Aboriginal times to 2015 when the last of the St John of God brothers left the hospital.
To win the book email justine.doherty@fairfax media.com.au with the reason you are interested in it. If you don’t win it and want a copy it’s $20. Ring 4588 5867.
