The Rural Fire Service ha said 90 per cent of homes destroyed by bushfire are lit by burning embers rather than direct flame.
Embers have the ability to travel many kilometres on the breeze, which means that even if you live well away from the bush you can still be at risk.
RFS says over Get Ready Weekend you can sidle up to local firefighters who will be able to talk to you about your personal risk and how you can best protect your home from fire.
They said one of the most important things you can do is sit everyone down in your home talk about exactly what each family member will do in a bush fire. They say it should only take 20 minutes.
See when your nearest brigade will be open this weekend.
