THEY had not done it for more than two decades, but the Londonderry Greys claimed two premiership wins on the weekend in what was a spectacular weekend for the club.
The Greys were revived last year after a two-decade absence from playing.
The under-13s division four team won their match against Brothers on Saturday, before the Penrith Junior Rugby League C Grade division 2 team backed up on Sunday and defeated the Penrith Waratahs.
C Grade coach Matt Byers said it was an incredible feeling to win the premiership.
“We were all ecstatic. Everyone had put so much hard work in and to get that victory at the end was unbelievable. It was was just awesome,” he said.
“Buck Rogers [the main force in the revival of the club] had to wipe away tears because he was so happy with how far the club has come in this time and the amount of support we got from the community.”
Byers said the club was grateful to everyone who turned up to Windsor on Sunday to watch the C Grade team play.
“We had people from Londonderry who don't even follow footy there yesterday,” he said.
“One of the coaching staff ran into a guy from Londonderry who said he just turned up to watch even though he didn't know anyone there.
“It was a pretty special moment for everyone.”
The C Grade team won 28-4. The team conceded the first try according to Byers, and at half-time, the score was 6-4.
“Our defence won us the game,” he said.
“The game was played in good spirits. The Waratahs are a very good team.
“The first 15 minutes the boys couldn't complete their sets but as the game went on, we just dominated and scored some really good tries.”
Byers admitted there were some nervous moments during the game.
“There are a lot of boys in the team who have never won a grand final,” he said.
“They put so much pressure on themselves so after they won it was unbelievable.
“It was a great team effort. There were some standout players, but everyone contributed and did what they needed to do.”
Byers said on Sunday most club members went back to the club’s spiritual home, The Richmond Race Club, to celebrate.
“The whole place was buzzing,” he said.
The under-13s team beat Brothers 26-12.
