The Community Sports Dad of the Year award is open for nominations.

The award celebrates sporting fathers, whether a coach, player or administrator, who are an inspiration to a local sports club.

Each Fathers Day, a father is crowned the Phillips community sports dad of the year and the recipient of a $5000 Rebel Sports gift voucher to donate to his local sports club of choice.

Last year’s winner was Eastwood St Andrew Football Club’s Stephen Bissett.

“Winning the award last year has helped the exposure for the club where we have been increasing our junior registrations and providing free skills nights for introduction to football,” Mr Bissett said.

“We have spent some of the funds on sports equipment and with the club turning 60 next year, we will use the reminder for more equipment so therefore a lot of planning to do.”

When accepting his award, he said he’s not special.

“There are a lot of dads out there just like me, its all about seeing our sons and daughters enjoying their sport whether its soccer, cricket or football and helping in any way you can, I just love it,” he said.

“It’s so rewarding for me doing my bit and also seeing lots of parents do the same. I simply like seeing the kids come up to me after school or before training and say with a small on their face - ‘how are you coach?’”

To get involved, visit and explain in 100 words or less why your chosen sports dad should win the award.

This is also a celebrity Philips sports dad of the year which has previously been won by Socceroo legend Tim Cahill, AFL superstars Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge, NRL champions Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston, two-time Grand Slam tennis champion Lleyton Hewitt, captain of the Kookaburras Mark Knowles, and last year’s winner, cricketer David Warner.

Nominations are open until Sunday, August 20.
