He may only be 11-years-old but Year 6 student Craig Black gathered nearly 1600 tubs of Play-Doh on his own to give to sick kids at Westmead Children’s Hospital.
The Hawkesbury Local Area Command do a Play-Doh drive every year to personally deliver to sick kids at Westmead.
This year Craig and his mum Franciska read about the drive on Facebook and the young, Shalvey local kicked straight into gear.
“I was reading about how the kids can only use the Play-Doh once and then it needs to be thrown out,” Craig said.
“I wanted to collect some Play-Doh for them … I got most of my donations from family and friends and small businesses.”
In just over three weeks Craig had gathered just under 1600 tubs of Play-Doh which he and his mum, and dad Stephen delivered to Windsor Police.
Hawkesbury Commander Grant Healy described Craig’s efforts as “awesome” and presented him with a letter and certificate of appreciation.
“Absolute awesome effort, we couldn't believe how old he was when we first saw it (the Play-Doh),” Commander Healy said.
“A lot of people have good thoughts in their life, but they don’t always follow it up with good actions – Craig has.”
Hawkesbury Police were told on their visit to Westmead Children’s Hospital that their record haul of Play-Doh mean’t that it freed up a lot of extra funds in the occupational therapists budget to purchase other materials for the sick kids.
Due to the health conditions of the children at Westmead, to limit the chance of infection, the Play Doh they enjoy using has to be discarded after each use.
