NORTH Richmond’s Michael Glenday has qualified for the Special Olympics Australia 2018 National Games.
Glenday, 37, will compete in ten-pin bowling. He is a regular at Windsor Tenpin Bowl, where he practices at his game.
Glenday won his division at the state titles to qualifying for the national games, to be held in Adelaide in April.
Glenday said he originally took up ten-pin bowling because he had been looking for a hobby.
“Some special Olympics people were at my local shops and they told me about it,” he said.
“I wanted to get to know more people and to get out of the house a bit.
“I just thought well I'll come and join in. I have other friends from social programs and they said to come on Saturday and they'd like to have me bowling.
“I joined up and it is great.”
Glenday said his best score was 163, and his goal at the moment was to top that score.
“I will hopefully improve and see if I can go higher in the competition,” he said.
Glenday said he also played golf, but at the moment was focusing on ten-pin bowling.
Special Olympics Australia assistant sport development manager for NSW/ACT Andrew Sadleir said ten-pin bowling had a huge participation level at the state championships, and Glenday did well to qualify for the national competition.
