A roadworker is in hospital with critical injuries after a drunk driver hit him at his work site at Cattai on Thursday night.
Police have charged the 41-year-old driver of a HiLux ute and he will appear in Penrith Local Court today (Friday). He was more than four times the legal limit.
Police said the ute was travelling north on Wisemans Ferry Road at about 11.30pm when it approached a roadwork zone at the intersection with Halcrows Road. It went past a traffic controller, hit several witch’s hats before entering the south-bound lane, which was closed for the roadworks.
The ute then hit the 59-year-old worker before before stopping between an embankment and a parked vehicle. The driver was trapped in the vehicle for a short time but was uninjured.
The roadworker received serious leg, pelvic and internal injuries and was taken to hospital.
The ute driver allegedly refused a breath test at the scene and was arrested. He was taken to Windsor Police Station where a breath analysis returned a reading of 0.211 – more than four times the legal limit.
Hawkesbury police attended the crash before the case was taken over by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.
The man was charged with aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, high-range PCA, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.
He was refused bail.
Roads and Maritime Services and contractor DM Roads are working with authorities to support the police investigations.
