Three generations of St Marys residents have now pulled up a chair at Guido’s Hair Care.
The barber shop, which first sharpened its blades in 1947, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
Guido Piccirilli took over the store in 1980, having worked there since the early 1960s.
His son, Gino, said the St Marys community had been “very good to us”.
“We’ve seen people come here who’ve had their own kids,” Mr Piccirilli said.
“I’ve been working here since 1989, so we’ve watched people grow up.”
Mr Piccirilli attested to the fact fashion trends move in cycles – even the much-maligned mullet has recently made a comeback – but the store has always maintained its traditional aesthetic.
The store was given a makeover to celebrate its milestone birthday this year, with old pictures telling a story about how the business was built.
“I wanted it to be something unique,” Gino said. “Barber shops are getting more popular now but we wanted to keep it traditional.”
He said his father was a local “legend” who worked tirelessly to make his business a success.
Mr Piccirilli hoped to keep the store in the family for “another 70 years”.
“That’s the plan,” he said. “This is my passion so I was always going to follow my father, but if my children don’t want to then I wouldn’t push them.
“It’s been a great effort by my father, he’s a legend.”
