SUSAN Templeman has pointed to the Hawkesbury’s comparative lack of mental health service providers as a major issue which ought to be addressed.
While there are many providers of mental health services in the Hawkesbury, there is a much larger number in Penrith.
The Member for Macquarie said the comparative lack of services was something identified through recent discussions on the topic of mental health.
“Right at the top of the list were access to services, which tend to be based in Penrith, and a simpler way to use the different services that are already available,” Ms Templeman said.
Ms Templeman hosted a ‘mental health consumer forum’ in May, where she spoke to people who need mental health services.
“We looked at the different stages at which people seek help, from the crisis point through to recovery and day-to-day support to ensure people stay well,” she said.
“Key issues were around the need for better preventative programs, early intervention and community-based ongoing support, especially for young people.
“There isn’t a single fix for improving mental health, and the participants at the forum were realistic that we need a range of strategies from government, private practitioners, the community and individuals.”
Ms Templeman is planning to host another forum later in the year for mental health service providers.
