Giants Netball lose to Sunshine Coast Lightning in Super Netball Grand Final

Giants Netball have been outplayed in the inaugural Super Netball grand final, losing 65-48 to the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

The Giants started well, getting out to a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but as the Lightning hit the lead, they never looked back.

Giants head coach Julie Fitzgerald said although the Lightning had a weekend off, it wasn’t the difference between the teams.

"We prepared really well for this game all week so we cannot use that as an excuse, I thought the Lightning just played exceptionally well,” she said.

"I think we will learn a lot from this game tonight. This is our first year as a club and I am very proud of what we have created this season and looking forward to next year."

Mount Druitt’s Kristina Brice started at goalshooter.

While she was taken off in the third quarter as Fitzgerald aimed to reinvigorate the attack, Brice was the pick of the Giants shooters with 24 goals from 29 shots.

The Lightning’s South African import Karla Mostert was named most valuable player after a strong performance at goal defence.

After the Giants were without Kim Green and Kristiana Manu'a for a majority of the season, Fitzgerald said the Giants have plenty of good times ahead of them.

"That old saying you've got to play one to win one," Fitzgerald said.

"I'm excited for what the future holds for this club. We definitely will keep the majority of the team together.”
