Floor trends have moved beyond traditional timber floorboards and carpet with a vast range of more affordable options available to consumers.
But what are the latest floor options that Australians are embracing to make the best of trends in scandi, hamptons or industrial inspired interiors?
Jodie Carter, an interior designer based in Sydney said there’s been a noticeable trend with affordable faux floors.
“I’m seeing an interest in vinyl planks. Because of technology, it means people can buy something, which still looks like timber and is so effective at mimicking floorboards, it integrates fine detail with grains,” Ms Carter said.
According to the designer, another affordable trend is laminate floors.
“A number of clients have also done laminate floors as opposed to the real thing because there is more choice in colour and size. If you buy actual timber flooring, it could be two or three times the price of laminate.
“With the laminate, you can buy it in wider boards now to achieve a scandi or hamptons feel with big whitewash floors or darker chocolate floors as well.
“They are good options for getting the look on a budget,” Ms Carter said.
However, she said her preference is to have a softer floor option in bedrooms.
“I would choose carpet in bedrooms or rugs to add warmth and texture. Although when homes have the same flooring throughout it creates better flow,” the designer said.
Ms Carter said another noticeable trend has been in concrete floors, suited for an industrial inspired interior, although there can be obstacles.
“Grey is on trend at the moment. I have a few clients who want to do an entire floor of concrete. If you’re building a home from scratch, a polished concrete base as a floor can be an easier choice rather than if you were renovating to lay concrete over something already existent,” Ms Carter said.
The designer said an easier-to-install option, which can offer similar tones can be achieved with concrete-look tiles.
Before making decisions on floors, Ms Carter said consumers should consider what the best option is for comfort, versatility and functionality for their lifestyle.
