Labor will use a petition signed by 10,000 western Sydney residents to force a debate over the reintroduction of the M4 toll.
On Friday, Premier Gladys Berejiklian and WestConnex Minister Stuart Ayres confirmed a toll would be put in place between Parramatta and Homebush at the completion of the M4 widening stage of WestConnex.
But on Monday, Opposition Leader Luke Foley visited St Marys to announce Labor’s bid to foil the plan.
Mr Foley joined Londonderry MP Prue Car to show off the petition, which Labor plans to introduce to the state Parliament next week.
“The toll is higher than what was promised at $4.56 each way - so even though the road is running late they’re still putting up the cost before they even get a chance to open it,” Mr Foley said.
“This is a tax targeted squarely at western Sydney motorists. We will be forcing Parliament to debate this great big tax on western Sydney.”
Ms Car said the toll would be “an insult to hard-working western Sydney families”.
“Western Sydney commuters are furious that they will be paying this great big new tax to Gladys Berejiklian for 43 years,” she said.
“It is a kick in the guts that communities in western Sydney will have to pay more than $2,000 dollars a year extra in tolls when cost of living pressures are already out of control.”
A toll of between $1.77 and $4.56 will be implemented on the road at the end of the first month, Ms Berejiklian said.
It’s still unclear when exactly that period will begin.
“The opening of this first section...is a great achievement but there is more to do with 21 road headers currently working 24/7 to extend the M4 underground from Homebush to Haberfield,” Ms Berejiklian said.
