Hawkeye earnt the name when walking down Windsor Street in Richmond recently. Though I’ve been walking down that street for nearly 20 years, for the first time I saw that on the sandstone edging of the gutter there was this iron ring. And another about a car’s length away. But no more. They’re about 5cm long and located outside the nail bar with the flashing sign opposite the park. I asked local historian Jan Barkley Jack but she didn’t know what they were for. A couple of people suggested something to tether a horse but having had horses for years I’ve never known of that method of tethering. Any theories? And party every day...
Gazette editor Matt Lawrence’s eyes popped out when reading the press release for Alice Cooper’s upcoming tour, supported by Ace Frehley from KISS, two acts he loves to death. Reading down to reviews of Ace’s last tour, this was the second last quote from the media. “Ace Frehley came through on a promise he made myself and fellow attendees of last night’s gig at The Metro in Sydney… that being to kick the derriere of all in the room with his sonic assault. – Hawkesbury Gazette”. It was from Matt’s review of a gig he attended during Ace’s last tour a couple of years ago.
Jesus who?
Staff in a Richmond cafe were talking amongst themselves about the upcoming Easter break, and about the origins of Easter regarding Jesus. One of the young staff members piped up, earnestly “he drowned didn’t he?”. They realised she was genuinely waiting for an answer, and completely lost it.
Cycling to remember?
Several people commented how Richmond was full of cyclists on Anzac Day. “And they were all stopping for coffee at the Ugly Mug!”, one of our staff members observed.
God save… who?
Hawkeye was told one young adult who attended the Richmond Anzac Day service was perplexed at hearing God Save the Queen before Advance Australia Fair. He didn’t even know the words. The first movie I remember seeing as a small child was Mary Poppins and you had to stand up and sing God Save the Queen with a huge black and white picture of her on the screen. This happened at every movie.
