IT was a magic day at Windsor High School as students and teachers donned wizard outfits for International Harry Potter Day.
Activities included a fancy dress fashion parade with ‘best dressed’ prizes, house groups allocation a la ‘sorting hat’ style, a wizard-style wildlife exhibit featuring owls, snakes, toads and tarantulas, and other Harry Potter-themed challenges and activities.
Linda Mooney, head teacher for HSIE, said the day was organised due to the popularity of the Harry Potter books with the students.
“Many Windsor High students are huge Harry Potter book fans, [with the books] always being reserved in the Library. Our school librarian found that there was actually an "International Harry Potter Day" being run around the globe, so Windsor High decided to jump on the global band wagon and run a Harry Potter themed Day at School,” Ms Mooney told the Gazette.
“Another reason behind our interest, was discovering that there is a World Quidditch Cup competition, and the current world champions of this sport are Australia, and the captain of this team is Miles Sneddon - a former Windsor High student who is still remembered fondly by many staff still teaching here today!”
Lessons were taught with a magical twist on the day, with History covering wizards and witchcraft in the Middle Ages and the Salem Witch Trials, while Science looked at ‘potions’ and what happens when different chemicals are mixed together.
There were also raffles, photo booths, Harry Potter theme music playing in the Quad, and Mr Snedden of Quidditch fame made a guest appearance.
In the evening, students brought along their families, picnic rugs and pillows for a Harry Potter movie night by candlelight.
