Tenders awarded for stage two of Blacktown Hospital expansion

A brand new building with an emergency department, intensive care unit and eight more operating theatres will make Blacktown home to one of the state’s largest hospitals.

Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) yesterday announced the award of two tenders to Australian companies AW Edwards and Taylor Constructions, to build a major new hospital building and additional parking respectively.

The new acute services building is scheduled to open in 2019.

It will include more emergency and short-stay beds, a psychiatric emergency care service, and an intensive care unit.

There will be eight new operating theatres with space for future expansion; purpose-built wards for birthing, maternity, newborn care and women's health; and new paediatric services with a dedicated emergency facilities.

Medical imaging, sterilising and non-clinical support services will round out the new building.

The car park extension is due to open at the end of this year, and will deliver another 422 spaces to take the site total to more than 1000.

The new facilities are part of stage two of the Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals Expansion Project.
