According to expert stylists, integrating oriental pieces into a home is an art.
Richard Misso, the creative director of an interior design service called The Stylesmiths said creating oriental inspired rooms takes more than simply adding a few Chinese decorations, it’s about balance.
“It takes planning, and a clear thought process that allows you to do away with the unwanted clutter,” he said.
In some circumstances, one way to style a home with oriental accents is by following the path of the minimalist. Only a few key pieces are necessary, but there are other aspects to be considered.
“Chinese interiors are led by tranquility. Balance is key, you will need the right harmony of colour, textures and materials.
“At its core, Chinese interiors are largely inspired by the colors of nature, and often mimic scenic landscapes and reinterpret natural colors to suit the interior. Think natural stone elements, timber floors or wall accents, bamboo blinds, Chinese artwork and ornaments,” Misso said.
In some homes, the best way to start styling is to think about the base such as the walls.
“It is best to keep the backdrop as neutral as possible. Gentle cream, understated light blues and even an elegant grey work just fine, it doesn’t need to be just white,” Misso said.
One area of the house not to forget is the entrance, as it is the room where first impressions are made. A pyramid of antique Chinese chests or a small water feature could be used.
“The sound of flowing water is considered both harmonious and positive according to Feng Shui,” Misso said.
For those who are styling their home with an oriental touch, here are some essentials that are worth considering:
- CUSHIONS, THROWS, UPHOLSTERY
According to The Stylesmiths, the key to accessorising with cushions, throws, curtains, upholstery and linen is combining layers of colour. They suggest cherry blossom pink, dusty pale purples and ravishing reds.
“If you’re looking for a little luxe add golden tones to create a majestic living room, which dominated at the Milan interiors fair in 2017,” Misso said.
- VASES AND TABLE LAMPS
You may have noticed that a current trend in light collections are oversized, ceramic Chinese inspired table lamps.
Vases adorning intricate patterns in blue or white or those that come in one block colours are becoming more popular as statement pieces.
- LIGHTING
The Stylesmiths have said lighting is key and could make or break an interior.
“Stylish hanging paper lanterns, sculptural lighting installations and a few carefully placed candles go a long way in creating a Chinese inspired interior,” Misso said.
- PLANTS AND FLOWERS
Lastly, the Stylesmiths suggest Asian themed interiors can be accentuated by plants and flowers. Consider bamboo, orchids or dusty pink roses.
