HAWKESBURY Council grants permission to an Oakville family to run a business, despite vocal opposition from neighbours.
At the November 29 Council meeting, 11 councillors voted in favour of a development application for the landscaping materials business, with John Ross the only one voting against the proposal.
Oakville’s Colin Jones applied to establish a business on his property on Hanckel Road, and some neighbours were concerned.
His son, David, told Council it was to be a small business, with supplies for people who wanted to do small-scale landscaping operations.
Hugh McCrory told Council he was worried about the security of his property.
“The security of my property when there is a six car park space for people to come through and see where I live,” he said.
Mr McCrory said he did not believe the business would be small, as David Jones had told Council earlier in the meeting.
He added he was worried about semi-trailers coming up his road every six weeks.
Lynne Clark said she too was concerned about trucks going up the road.
“This is a road that is under constant repair. Outside my house I have had work crews outside my house I don’t know how often,” she said.
Liberal councillor Nathan Zamprogno said he saw no reason to vote against the DA.
“I don’t believe the impact of this development is excessive. I believe people should, within limits, be able to do whatever they want to on their own land,” he said.
Fellow Liberal Patrick Conolly said the land was zoned for this purpose and the applicant had a right to run a business there.
