THE Hawkesbury Jets women won a charity basketball tournament on October 15.
The girls won the annual Lady Hoops 3on3 competition, which is hosted every year during mental health month to raise awareness of the plight of people who have mental illnesses.
Rachel Borysko of the Hawkesbury Jets said it was a great day, capped off by the win from the girls.
As the name suggests, the competition was a three on three one, rather than the traditional five players on the court.
Borysko said the Jets sent four players, Margarita Saad, Taylah Cottees, Rachael Carrick & Mary Costello, to the tournament.
“The competition is highly contest and is invitation only,” she said.
“Players consist of ex Australian players, current & past Waratah Championship Womens players & high level domestic players, so we were mixing it with some very seasoned experienced players.”
Borysko said the girls went well in the qualifying rounds, and were bumped into the second division.
She said despite hard fought games, the girls managed to win three of four and qualify for the finals.
From there, they went onto the grand final, which looked to be lost, before a buzzer beater from Rachael Carrick sealed a win for Hawkesbury.
“It was an awesome effort by all four girls, they demonstrated great teamwork, determination & skill with their confidence level in each other growing with each game resulting in an outstanding tournament win,” she said.
