HAWKESBURY power boat racer Corey Davoll flew the first Australian flag for the first time at the Nations Cup in China earlier this month.
Davoll and team mate Brock Cohen were the first Australians to enter the tournament as a team, and if not for a crash by Cohen, could have finished quite highly in the points.
Team Australia finished fourth of eight teams in the tournament, and likely would have finished much higher, if not for Cohen’s crash.
Davoll ended up grabbing two second place finishes at the meeting, while Cohen made it into the final shootout, eventually losing to a driver from the United Arab Emirates.
Davoll said he was very pleased with his performance.
“It makes me feel pretty confident in my own ability,” he said.
“We were all in the same boats, same motor, propellers and it just came back down to driving.
“It shows there is some potential there,” he joked.
Davoll said it was a fantastic trip, and he was able to meet some of his power boat racing heroes at the event.
Davoll said he had always looked up to American pair Scott Gillman and Jay Price, and was thrilled to spend some time with them.
“Being able to race with all these people I used to watch on tv. I never thought I would able to race against them and beat them,” he said.
“One of them is a four time Formula 1 champion and the other is a three time champion.
“I used to watch them all the time when I was growing up. We ended up getting along really well actually.”
Davoll said he had always wanted to compete in the event, and was stoked to have done so.
He said he had already signed up to race again next year with Cohen.
Davoll said Cohen was the one who originally approached him about going.
“Brock races in a class below me in our Australian series but we have developed a good relationship,” he said.
“He actually invited me to go and race over there and I lent him my boat for a few a race to get up to speed.
“He normally races Formula 3, but we raced in F1H20 boats. Brock picked up really well. He qualified ninth out of 16 and he got all the way through to the final and he came second in match racing.”
