THE deputy Mayor of Hawkesbury will have a two year term, although there was a push within Council chambers to limit it to one year.
Labor’s Barry Calvert was elected deputy Mayor at the first meeting of the new Council on Tuesday, September 27.
However, several councillors, before Cr Calvert was elected, voiced their opinion that the deputy Mayoral term should only be one year.
Cr Paul Rasmussen said it would allow for more flexibility.
“I think one year makes a little bit of sense. Maybe there are some new councillors or other councillors who want to have a try at this role,” he said.
“It will give an opportunity for those councillors who will grow into their role as councillors.”
Cr Patrick Conolly said a one year term gave the opportunity to dismiss a deputy Mayor, if they were not up to scratch.
“We have the opportunity for the deputy Mayor to come back at the end of that year and decide whether we are happy with their performance,” he said.
“I can see a number of people in this chamber who would do well in their role as deputy mayor and I don't see why we should limit that to two votes in this Council.”
Cr Calvert said a two year term added more stability.
“I believe the government has put forward a change in the way things work, and it is designed to provide stability for councils across the state,” he said.
