HAWKESBURY netball is in good shape according to the region’s state league captain Kelly Place.
For the second year running, Hawkesbury’s state league representative team made, but unfortunately lost, the grand final.
The team went down 48-41 to Inner Western Suburbs on September 6.
Place said it was a shame the team lost, but two grand final appearances in two years was a sign of Hawkesbury’s depth of talent.
“I definitely think we can be a mainstay in the finals. We maintained a lot of girls from last year's team,” she said.
“If we keep the same combinations we can build on what we've got. As long as we give it everything there is no reason we can't take out the grand final.”
Place said things started slowly in the team’s 2016 campaign, but toward the end of the season they were on a roll.
“We had a rocky start trying to find the right combinations. We had some players playing in different positions they would not ordinarily play in,” she said.
“To their credit we made it work and it turned out to be a pretty good season for us.
“It took a little while for us all to click, but towards the end we started going quite well.”
Place said as one of the more experienced members in the team, she wanted to win a grand final before she had to call time on her career.
“I am one of the senior players and have captained the team for a few years,” she said.
“I would like to win a state league grand final before I finish up with netball. I think it is definitely within reach.”
