WILBERFORCE’S Billy Scott was thrilled when he was picked for the under-12s NSW Schoolboys team, but was humbled when the coaching staff made him captain of the team.
The team broke an eight year drought of wins by Queensland at the National carnival, which ran for a week in Canberra in late July and early August.
Billy, who normally plays at five-eighth, was picked at hooker for the competition, and made the position his own.
As captain, he was required to talk to the referees, and earned himself the nickname “Cameron Smith”, for his respectful, yet firm approach to talking to the referees.
Billy said he enjoyed being captain, and was completely surprised when he was picked.
The primary school competition is traditionally dominated by Queensland, because the primary school system in Queensland goes to year 7, unlike here in NSW, meaning Queensland has a much bigger player base.
