GOT a spot in your garden for another shrub or tree? Residents of the Hawkesbury can get two free native plants a person or six free plants a family at as part of the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter open day on Saturday morning, July 30.
You can also get all your gardening and weed questions answered by local staff and volunteers who grow native plants at the nursery all year round.
Hawkesbury River County Council will also be there, providing information on weed awareness, weed identification, weed control and weed legislation.
Council’s giveaway of more than 1000 trees, shrubs and climbers to residents is part of Planet Ark’s National Tree Day.
The plants will help residents use less fertiliser, reduce water costs, and control pests as these plants prefer local conditions, overall helping achieve a healthy garden with less maintenance. (See list of species to be given away at bottom of this story).
Hawkesbury Community Nursery, which is on the same site as the animal shelter, will be open on July 30 from 9am to midday. If you can’t get there on the Saturday, they will open once more for the giveaway on Thursday, August 4 from 10am to midday for residents to collect their plants.
Proof of residency is required to claim your free plants such as a bill or driver’s licence. Plants will only be provided to residents and family members who attend.
Hawkesbury Landcare will also be present to provide information on specific Landcare Groups in the Hawkesbury area. Talk to them about joining a Landcare group.
Hawkesbury Community Nursery is located at 10 Mulgrave Road, Mulgrave. For queries call Martin Gauci on 4560 4525.
