Apple is rumoured to be ditching one of the most complained-about features of the modern iPhone: the paltry 16GB storage of its base model.
The new iPhone 7, expected to be released in September, will come with a minimum storage capacity of 32GB, according to Kevin Wang, an analyst at IHS Technology in China who claims to have links to Apple's supply chain.
Mr Wang posted on Chinese social media site Weibo this week that the iPhone 7 would feature 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage as a minimum.
He claimed to have become aware of the development through "supply chain research". Mr Wang previously has provided genuine information about Apple products, leading many to believe the latest leak is also genuine.
Apple has faced criticism in the past that its cheaper and popular entry-level 16GB iPhone simply did not have adequate storage capacity to cater to the smartphone's features.
The phones quickly become full of photos, videos, and apps, especially when Apple recently introduced features on the iPhone 6s that used large amounts of storage, such as 4K video recording and Live Photos.
Many saw the cheaper model merely as a way for the company to try to sell customers the more expensive 64GB version.
Tech Insider reported that, apart from more storage, the iPhone 7 was rumoured to look "nearly identical to the iPhone 6 generation with redesigned antenna lines that are less visible".
The larger Plus model was said to come with a dual camera, while the regular-sized model would likely have an updated single camera, Tech Insider said.
Apple is expected to save any major changes until the release of next year's iPhone, possibly called the iPhone 8, which is rumoured to feature an all-glass body and possibly wireless charging.
Apple has not commented on the reports.
