THE Royal Australian Air Force is sick of losing to the Navy in bowls, and brought the best the force had to offer to Windsor for trials.
Every year the Army, Navy and RAAF compete in an inter-services bowls competition, which the Navy has reportedly dominated over the past few years.
RAAF member Gerard Harkins said this year, the air force decided to do something about it.
“I think it is a better than even money chance we'll win. Navy has been dominating for a years,” he said.
“It stings when we don't win. They [the Navy] enjoy the banter that goes with beating us. It hurts put it that way.”
Air force members from across Australia descended upon the Windsor Bowls Club, which hosted an all week tournament to sort out the men from the boys.
It was the first time such a tournament had been hosted, and it ran from May 15 to May 20.
There was even some time to chip in some fund raising for Defence Care.
The service members stayed at the Richmond RAAF Base, and then got the bus up to Windsor each day.
Bowls club board member Terry Flannigan said the club was only too happy to help.
He said the club cooked the lunch, the RAAF cooked the barbecue for dinner, and everyone had a good time.
“It was the first year they tried it at Windsor, and it was a success. The air force people were accommodated on the base and we gave them full use of the club,” he said.
“We had the greenskeeper in here early in the morning to get the tournament greens ready every day. It worked out well.”
