SMOKE gets in your eyes…. and your lungs, and your washing. The Hawkesbury and the rest of Sydney suffered last weekend as major hazard reductions were done all over the Sydney basin.
The good news is that all the Hawkesbury burns went well, Hawkesbury fire control officer Karen Hodges said on Tuesday, and only one more is scheduled at the moment – the Comleroy Road north area. That burn is 200ha, and is planned, weather permitting, for Saturday, May 28.
Five burns last week created all the smoke. Two began on Wednesday, May 18 – one at Glenara Road, Kurrajong Heights, and one in the Drip Rock area of Colo Heights.
Last weekend the two burns originally scheduled for March 12 (and described in our Gazette story of April 4 ‘Science of planning a burn’) finally took place.
These were one around Madison’s Mountain Retreat on Bells Line of Road, and a 550ha burn of Nungaroo Ridge, behind the old Ferngrove Tree Farm.
The fifth burn was on Saturday too, near Coobah Road, East Kurrajong.
