GROSE Vale’s Kody Szabo is very fast in the water, and to prove it, he has recently won a bag full of medals.
The 12-year-old was fastest for his age group in the 12-13 years boys at the Age Nationals Championships in Adelaide last month, and was seventh fastest out of boy age groups.
He won a gold medal for the 50-metre freestyle in Adelaide, and two days later at the NSW Combined High Schools swimming championships won golds in the 13-year boys 50 and 100-metre freestyle.
This weekend, he is a strong chance to medal at the NSW All Schools Swimming carnival.
For such a young a man, he certainly has his sights set high. Ody said he was planning to beat the Australian 50-metre freestyle record at the swimming nationals next year.
“I'm going to get the Australian record. It is 24.00 flat. With all my effort and training, I'd like to say I can beat it,” he said.
Kody said he had a tough training regime to ensure he was as quick through the water as possible. He said all up, he spent nearly 24 hours of his week in the pool.
“It is alright most of the time, except when I am really tired,” Kody said.
Despite the training presenting challenges, Kody said it certainly had its rewards.
This year he has already been to Adelaide, and could potentially travel to Darwin if he gets a medal as well.
“When I went to Adelaide it was my first time on a plane. I was a bit nervous about it actually,” he said.
“It was a pretty good experience in Adelaide. The pool is pretty big, I definitely didn't expect that.”
