THE under-15 Hawkesbury Saints girls played the same team every game in their maiden season, but that will not be the case this year.
The girls have joined a western Sydney under-15s competition with 11 teams, and will play their first match on Sunday at Blacktown.
The club laid a lot of ground work to establish a girls team in 2015, and club president Anthony Firmer said he was stoked the girls were able to play in a large competition now.
“Everyone is over the moon. The girls are a true part of the club. The boys have helped to train the girls and trained alongside them,” he said.
“We've had a lot of support from the families, who have got on board as well and really got behind the girls.”
Team coach Simonne Kennedy said she could not wait for the first game.
“The girls are really excited and really keen to actually see how they have progressed,” she said.
“It was new for all of us last year, we only played one team and we played them every week on a Friday night.
“I think last season we had a team of maybe 15 girls. Netball is a big thing in the Hawkesbury so it is difficult to find girls, but we have a lot of sisters of boys who play for the club and now the girls have asked their friends to come along too.”
Simonne said the girls in the team were keen to get stuck in on the weekend and loved playing Aussie rules football.
