Hawkesbury’s under-16 representatives could not do enough to defeat Illawarra at the weekend, despite a 85 run stand by Reece Lipowicz.
The team needed to win two finals games, to have a crack at winning the competition.
The Hawks were competing in the NSW Districts Cricket Association Watson Shield competition, and had been on a three game roll.
The team lost its first two matches, but then went on a three game winning streak.
However, it all came to a halt, as Illawarra, one of the teams that defeated the Hawks, stood tall and chased Hawkesbury’s total.
The Hawks won the toss and went in to bat, and were bowled out for 152.
Reece Lipowicz was the lone batsman to resist Illawarra’s attack, making 85, as the rest of the batting line-up fell around him.
The Hawks struck quickly with the ball, dismissing one of Illawarra’s openers for six, however, it became tough work after that.
Illawarra easily chased down the total in 37.4 overs, only losing three wickets during the run chase.
It was a sad end to a team, which according to coach Michael Shields, had gelled well over the final three games of the representative competition.
