EVEN hail didn’t stop Glenn Mitchell’s fishing determination, and his dedication paid off when he won the Hawkesbury Fishing Classic.
The Mount Druitt man stayed out on the Hawkesbury River through both Friday and Saturday during the fishing competition, though in hindsight he didn’t have to.
He hauled in the winning 19kg Jewfish on his first night on the river, but stayed on through the storms on November 15 and 16, finally calling it quits on November 17.
Mitchell said he had won the classic once before, and it was the only competition he took part in.
“I love this fishing competition,” he said. “You know all the good fisherman get in there and you get to catch up with a lot of guys you see a lot.
“Not many competitions have the charity aspect. That’s what I like about it, because I know the money is going to a good cause.”
The fishing classic raised more than $20,000, which will be donated to two Hawkesbury charities.
Mitchell said he got out to the Hawkesbury River as often as he could during the year.
“I try to get down there every week and throw a line out,” he said. “I'm a die-hard, I used to go out for like two to three days in a row.
“I was out there chasing bait on Friday and I was out there during the storms on Friday and Saturday. We actually got hail.”
