AREAS around Riverstone and Marsden Park could soon be home to 19 new suburbs, with Blacktown Council starting the process of naming the new communities.
The new suburbs will make up the ever growing North West Growth Corridor (NSWGC) and be home to thousands of new residents.
While existing suburb names of Colebee, Marsden Park, Schofields, Shanes Park, Riverstone, Rouse Hill and Vineyard will remain, their boundaries will change if the proposal is approved.
According to Council the names proposed for the new suburbs will be based on history, geography and botany, which also reflect the guidelines of the final consent authority, the Geographical Names Board (GNB).
“The historical theme could include indigenous, nonindigenous or military history,” a Council spokesperson said.
“The geographical theme could include topographical features such as creeks, hills or floodplains.
“The botanical theme could include names of plants or plant communities such as Cumberland Plain Woodland,” they said.
If the report is adopted, council will consult with key stakeholders and compile a list of preferred names for each new suburb based on the proposed themes.
A minimum of two names and a maximum of five names for each new suburb will be recommended.
The options will then be submitted to council and put on public exhibition before council sends its recommendations off to the GNB.
