THE first round of Sydney Grade Cricket could not have gone much better for Hawkesbury Cricket Club, and in round two against Blacktown the club hopes the good times will keep rolling.
Anthony Kershler put in a performance which earned him the title of grade player of the week.
Kershler took 5-18 against a Manly-Warringah first grade team, which won the competition last season.
Cricket manager Aaron Lewis said Kershler, 47, was brought up to first grade to help the younger players along and had already proved his worth.
"It was a massive start to the season for first grade, it was a big performance," he said.
"I think it sent a bit of a warning sign out to other clubs that we're quite serious this year.
"Anthony Kershler is a former first class cricketer and we've brought him back in to add some experience for the side, at 47 he is still good enough to hold a spot."
One of the younger cricketers is Arjun Nair, who recently had a tour of England with the Australian under-19 team.
Nair is just 17, and was picked as a bowling all-rounder for the Australian tour, but Lewis said the club had high hopes for him, and had moved him to the crucial number three spot.
"We want to give him an opportunity higher up the order to prove he is a capable batsmen," he said.
"I think he has been picked as a bowling all-rounder, we've had him batting at six and seven over the past few years but we've moved him up to prove he can build big innings."
Nair had an unhappy outing there, making just eight runs in the first grade, but Lewis said he was confident there would be plenty more to come in the future.
Lewis said he had tipped wicket-keeper and vice-captain Corey Lowe to have a big game against his former club.
The club will have five grades in action on Saturday, October 3.
