WINDSOR Country Golf Club has made a natural memorial to pay tribute to the life members of the club.
The four living life members, Frank Khouri, Terry Clark, Doug Shearer and Narelle Cross, were at the club on Tuesday, August 25, to see the Life Member Grove.
The grove is near the 13th hole on the course, and has a tree for each of the 11 people to have been made life members.
Frank Khouri is the current treasurer and has been for the past 17 years.
It is his second stint as treasurer, in his first he served for 10 years, totalling 27 years.
Mr Khouri said he thought the grove was a nice way to remember the effort the life members had put toward the club.
‘‘It is quite visible, you have to walk past it to get from one hole to another,’’ he said.
‘‘I think it is quite an honour to have a landmark dedicated to life members.
‘‘Everybody was very pleased with its location and the plants that are there.
‘‘They should look terrific when Spring comes around and they all go in to bloom.’’
Mr Khouri said he joined the club in 1976 and was made a life member in 2011.
‘‘I was very honoured to be a life member. I was actually nominated by Allan Bushell who was the original life member,’’ he said.
‘‘I was very honoured to be nominated by him, I was very grateful for it.’’
Club general manager Rob McLean said he could not think of a better spot for the grove.
‘‘It is to the rear of the 13th hole, next to the iconic Fairfield House,’’ he said.
‘‘Life membership is not something that is given out too often, to have them all four in the one place at the one time was quite lucky.
‘‘Our club presentation night last year was the only other time I’ve seen them all together in the one place.’’
The other life members who are no longer alive were Allan Bushell, Mervyn Cross, Stephen Griffiths, James Perrottet, Robert Walker and Dorothy Bushell.
On Tuesday, August 25, the club also unveiled a memorial to deceased club member Julian Reynolds. See next week’s Gazette for more details.
