Canberrans will have the chance to meet the makers of Gayby Baby, the documentary about same-sex parents controversially banned from NSW schools, when the film screens in the ACT next month.
NSW Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli banned every public school in the state from screening the documentary during school hours on Wednesday, following a front page Daily Telegraph story about Burwood Girls High in Sydney's inner-west screening the film to 1200 students.
The film will have its Canberra premiere at Palace Electric Cinema on Thursday September 10 followed by a question and answer session with director Maya Newell and producer Charlotte Mars.
Already the makers have expressed hopes the documentary may have a longer run in the ACT if it attracts enough interest.
"We think there are lots of people in our nation's capital who ought to see Gayby Baby," the film's Facebook page reported.
"If we can pack out this first screening we will be able to stay on the big screen in Canberra for longer, so please don't delay, grab your friends and book tickets as soon as possible."
Premier Daniel Andrews threw his support behind the film, on Thursday, describing the NSW government's ban as "cruel rubbish".
Mr Andrews slammed the NSW government's intervention saying he and his wife and children loved the award-winning documentary when they saw it at the Melbourne International Film Festival.
Gayby Baby is described as "a portrait of four kids – Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham – whose parents all happen to be gay".
"As they each wrestle with the challenges of oncoming adolescence, the outside world wrestles with the issue of marriage equality, and whether or not kids like them are at risk."
