HAWKESBURY BMX rider Paige Harding had a painful end to her world championship campaign in Belgium. Harding, 12, broke her wrist in a finals race, which ruled her out from further competition. She had been doing quite well, and was on track for a good result until the crash. Her mother Mary Harding said Paige was ‘‘bitterly disappointed’’ in what happened, although her mother added she was very proud of what Paige had already done.
HAWKESBURY City FC’s Jason Browne scored two goals to help the club to a 4-1 win over Inter Lions at the weekend. The round 19 clash of the Football NSW Men’s State League 1 competition was important for the finals aspirations of both clubs, who entered the round with the same number of points. The win means the Hawks have jumped two places up to eighth on the ladder, and are out of the final five by five points. With an easy — at least on paper — run home, the Hawks have a great chance to make the finals. The under-20s drew 1-1, under-18s drew 2-2 and the under-16s won 4-1 against Inter Lions. On Saturday, the club will host Nepean FC at Bensons Lane.
HAWKESBURY trained Campania had its sixth career win at the weekend, when it raced at Rosehill Gardens. The six-year-old bay mare, trained by Garry Frazer, won by 0.2 of a length on Saturday, with the win of the 1900-metre 85 benchmark worth $48,750. Fellow Hawkesbury trainer Ethne Potowski’s Lion Couchant ran ninth, after three wins from its previous three starts. It was bumped with about 150-metres left in the race and fell back through the field of the 1100-metre 75 handicap. Lion Couchant would not have won regardless of the bump as Matthew Dale’s Fell Swoop surged up the outside to win the race.
POPPETS have closed to within one point of Colo on the ladder of the Hawkesbury Netball Association. Poppets defeated Pitt Town-Oakville 50-17 in round 13 of the A1 Grade at the Mileham Street Netball Complex on the weekend. With the final round of the regular season this Saturday, Poppets have a chance to finish the season as minor premiers should Colo stumble against Green Hills. In other round 13 action, Londonderry defeated Macquarie 50-25 and Huxley defeated Green Hills 60-29. Colo, Poppets, Londonderry and Huxley are all guaranteed a place in the finals now, with the final round to determine the minor premiership and final ladder positions. Poppets will play Huxley and Londonderry will play Pitt Town-Oakville, while Macquarie has the bye on Saturday.
THE heats for Richmond Race Club’s Phil Davis Memorial Race were hosted at the weekend, with eight dogs qualifying. The $10,000 race will be run at the club on Saturday night. Blackey Streak, Cobber in Motion, Father Skeeta, No Diggity, Pedagogy, Serena Fly High, Sir Reuben and Time for Money all qualified for the race. The boxes were not finalised at the time the Hawkesbury Gazette went to press. The race is run in memory of the late Phil Davis, who was popular around the club.
