Two Brisbane MPs have been touted as possible replacements for Bronwyn Bishop in the Speaker's chair in Parliament House.
Both Ryan MP Jane Prentice and Brisbane MP Teresa Gambaro have been mentioned in political circles as possible replacements, along with fellow Queenslander and Deputy Speaker Bruce Scott.
Also mentioned have been Victorian Liberal MPs Russell Broadbent, Tony Smith and Sharman Stone.
But a well-placed federal LNP figure told Fairfax Media it was more likely than not that Father of the House Phillip Ruddock would get the gig.
"For Ruddock to say 'if I'm asked, I'll accept it' was a bit of a lay down misere," the source said.
"I think Ruddock's got it hands down … for him to come out and say that was a big message out to his colleagues."
Ms Gambaro's name has been touted as a possible contender, but she remained tight-lipped about her prospects on Monday.
"I'm sure the best person will be chosen for the position," she said.
The Member for Brisbane fended off a preselection challenge last month, after Prime Minister Tony Abbott intervened on her behalf.
Ms Prentice said she would not comment on the selection of the new Speaker.
Mr Scott announced on Monday he would not recontest his seat of Maranoa at the next federal election.
Mrs Bishop resigned as Speaker on Sunday after three weeks of intense media and poltical pressure over an expenses scandal that included the charter of a helicopter to fly from Melbourne to Geelong.
Mr Abbott has since announced a broad review of the entitlements system.
The Prime Minister said the review would lead to root-and-branch reform that ensured "members of Parliament are working for the Australian people and not simply off on frolics of their own".
