IT IS like a combination of gridiron and soccer with bubbles on.
That is the description one Hawkesbury YMCA staffer gave of bubble soccer.
He was talking about bubble soccer because the organisation’s open day on Sunday will feature a bubble soccer tournament.
Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium sports co-ordinator Braydon Greentree said the open day had been generating a lot of attention, particularly because of the bubble soccer.
‘‘Bubble soccer is soccer, but you are wearing these plastic zorbs. It is kind of like gridiron combined with soccer in bubbles,’’ he said.
‘‘This is the first time we’ve had bubble soccer here and hopefully once we’ve done this we’ll try to run some more one-off tournaments.
‘‘We’ve had a lot of hype and interest in the tournament and we had a lot of entries last week.’’
The open day will be at the Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium on Sunday, rather than the Hawkesbury Oasis Centre, where it has been run in previous years.
It will be open from 10am to 2pm, and there will be plenty happening, including sports, kids activities and a barbecue.
Hawkesbury Jets basketballers will be there to try to generate more interest in their sport.
Hawkesbury Basketball Association secretary Stacy O’Toole said players from the Sydney Kings basketball team would be there for autographs and pictures.
She said the association would have three shooting machines there as well as special basketballs, which record data when thrown such as the accuracy of a shot.
Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium and Hawkesbury Oasis centre manager Sue Fryer said the day was to demonstrate to people what the YMCA offered to the community.
‘‘There will be a soccer and netball shootout, kids bootcamp, slide hockey and soccer, volleyball and dodgeball,’’ she said.
‘‘There will be a barbecue for people, a cafe with food available throughout the day and we will have face painting, jumping castles, laser tag, basketball matches, there will be a kids’ disco.
‘‘The purpose is just to run some community events and engage with the commmunity, we thought we’d try something different this year and have it at the stadium.’’
