GUIDE Dogs NSW is calling for Hawkesbury volunteers to provide short-term care for up to 20 dogs when puppy raisers go away for weekends or holidays.
Starting in September and October, carers are needed to look after the dogs for 12 to 14 months.
Puppy raising manager Karen Hayter said they were looking for people who are home most of the time and are interested in putting effort into training and socialising the dogs.
‘‘Short-term carers are responsible for feeding, grooming, house-training and visiting the vet,’’ Mrs Hayter said.
‘‘There’s also the commitment to provide lots of love and cuddles to the dog. Carers play a critical part in developing a playful puppy into a responsible guide dog.’’
Guide Dogs will provide food, veterinary care, flea and tick prevention.
They will also be on hand to answer any questions and provide guidance.
Pitt Town resident and puppy raiser Margaret Krakowski said she fell in love with the idea almost immediately.
‘‘Knowing that you are giving back to the community by raising a dog which will change someone’s life is incredibly satisfying,’’ Mrs Krakowski said.
‘‘Pippa won my heart and has taught me to be patient. She also taught us a little more about love, life and its many challenges. It will be painful when we have to give her back to Guide Dogs but we know she will change someone else’s life.’’
‘‘I would recommend it to anyone who has plenty of time and lots of dedication. It’s a wonderful opportunity for people who may not want the lifetime commitment of having a dog of their own.’’
To be eligible, carers need to have a fully-fenced yard, be away from home no more than four hours at a time, have access to a car and attend training days once a month at the Guide Dogs Centre in Glossodia.
