MORE than 36 people with disabilities in the Hawkesbury have a stable job thanks to Richmond’s five star Nova employment agency.
There are 650 people in the Hawkesbury living with an intellectual or physical disability and the agency has dozens of keen employers ready to take on local job-seekers.
Gospers Sheds at Freemans Reach is one of many employers which has embraced Nova Employment and provided four jobseekers the chance to show their ability in the workplace.
One stand-out employee is 19-year-old James Smithers who lives with Asperger’s syndrome — a disorder which impacts the ability to communicate and socialise.
The recent high-school graduate is currently doing his apprenticeship in engineering fabrication.
For the past five months, James has enjoyed working and said he feels more accepted than ever before.
‘‘Everyone is really nice to me and they are always helping me out,’’ James said.
‘‘I love the hands on work and have learnt to do so much in just five months.’’
He left school last year with hopes to find a job with no luck until his aunty referred him to Nova.
He said it was one of the best decisions he has ever made.
Office manager Paula Pender said James works harder than the average employee.
‘‘He is absolutely fantastic and we are very happy with the decision to take him on board,’’ Mrs Pender said.
‘‘He fits in really well and gets along with everyone. We have proudly seen him develop from a boy to a man in such a short time. It hit me hard when he told me he loves it because he isn’t being bullied.’’
Open day: Community members and job-seekers are invited to Richmond Nova Employment’s open day on Thursday, August 6.
Manager Kerry Spindler said it was a chance for people to learn more about the programs and activities on offer.
‘‘People can come in, have a chat with our staff and find out a little more on what career pathways are right for them,’’ Mrs Spindler said.
‘‘It’s a good opportunity for job-seekers.’’ The open day will run from 11am to 3pm. Details: 24 Bosworth Street, Richmond or call Nova on 4570 3300.
