Black and white on trend with new tile designs

From the traditional fare of colours used in a checkerboard design across hallways, bathrooms and kitchens, the latest fashion statement has black and white appearing in startling geometrics, rustic treatments and subtle variations of floral halftones. The looks are giving the palette more flexible appeal, says designer Rachel Gilding.

“Black and white is a proven enduring colourway and a truly a flexible option for any space in the home,” Rachel says. “All colours go with black and white, so you can choose a pattern that is itself the hero or opt for a more subtle design and then ‘ice’ with colour and texture in furnishings.”

Through her work with Beaumont Tiles, Rachel says a trending look for bathrooms is using more black for a moody feel. Knowing what to scale and how accessorise is within easy reach, she says:

The look it can give. Pure black and white gives a bold contrast that is classic and timeless. To tone down the contrast, decorate in monochrome for a modern country feel.

Clever ways of using it. In a niche area, full-feature floor and walls or decorating a bath hob can speak of high design. Tile around a fireplace with a graphic pattern to create a focal point.  

Choose between dramatic or subtle. Go for more black for a dark and moody feel or white for light and airy. A black and white pattern as a feature wall will break up a look.

In a small or large space. Go for a graphical floor and keep the surrounds simple in a small space. In really small spaces, try a nook. When going for full-floor impact in a larger space, keep everything else subtle and let the floor be the hero.

Furniture and fittings that go with it. As the combo is versatile contrast with colourful accessories or play up the monochromatic  tones. Matt black taps and shower fittings add drama. For warmth, opt for old gold tapware and wood.
