More than 24.5 tonnes of Hawkesbury e-waste will not end up in landfill this year, due to a recycling event held in March.
Hawkesbury Council congratulated residents for taking part in their initiative, which saw more than than 510 cars turn up over two days to recycle electrical household items such as televisions, computers, DVD players, projectors and cables.
The purpose of the event, held at Hawkesbury Showground, was to make it easier to dispose of those items in an environmentally responsible manner. It is part of the federal government's National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme.
Mayor Kim Ford was pleased with the outcome, with the e-waste collected reaching the equivalent of 2.5 shipping containers.
“I am happy to see that Hawkesbury residents are utilising these services to dispose of waste in environmentally friendly ways," he said.
"It's important we are mindful of how the disposal of our waste can affect the environment."
The next e-waste event is planned for early 2016.
Until the next event, residents can find suitable locations to dispose of their e-waste at www.hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au.
