Friends and family have paid an emotional tribute to a Wodonga teenager who died when the ute in which he was travelling lost control on a bend and flipped over.
The dual-cab ute was travelling towards Yackandandah along Wodonga-Yackandandah Road at Staghorn Flat when it left the road and rolled just after 9pm on Saturday.
Spencer Michael Botting, 16, the front-seat passenger, died at the scene.
One of the back-seat passengers, Wodonga's Drew Turnbull, was put in an induced coma and remains in a critical condition after being flown to Melbourne's Alfred hospital with serious injuries.
The driver, a 17-year-old from Wodonga, and another teenage boy, who was sitting in the back, were taken to Albury hospital with minor injuries.
The driver held a NSW licence but was driving a Victorian registered vehicle.
More than 200 family members and friends gathered at the crash site on Sunday afternoon to pay their respects.
Spencer's closest school friends from Wodonga Senior Secondary College organised the tribute.
Those closest to him formed a circle as a large wooden cross was hammered into the ground.
They all agreed his "cheeky smile" was the thing they would remember the most.
His parents and older brother laid the first flowers, over which they huddled together for a moment with just the family.
Then the tributes flowed as snap-back hats were hung from the cross and a photo of Spencer was placed at the base in a sea of flowers.
Boards were passed around and signed with heart-felt messages to the teenager before red-and-orange balloons were released.
Darcy Edgar said Spencer, one of his best mates, had been taken too soon.
"We love and miss him," he said.
Jaidyn Tooley said there was never a dull moment when Spencer was around.
"He was always happy and his cheeky smile - he pulls girls with that smile," Jaidyn said.
"He was loyal to everyone and mature for his age; he never turned down a night with the boys."
Spencer's love for rapper Kendrick Lamar earned him the nickname "Lamar".
He was always describing things as "red hot", "lush boi" or saying "like it's Lamar".
Spencer played football for Kiewa in the thirds team and was a keen snowboarder.
His friends laughed as they talked about the new mittens he had just bought for the snow and how he always dressed like a "tradie" even though he was still at school.
But they were sad to think he would miss his first day at the plumbing apprenticeship he had just taken and the snow trip they had planned.
Friends also left heartfelt comments on Spencer's Facebook page, while a tribute page was created.
Three detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit travelled from Melbourne, arriving about 3am.
Detective Senior Constable Matthew Hunt from the investigation unit said it was a tragic loss of life.
"We are looking at speed and alcohol as the cause," he said.
"The vehicle has lost it around a bend, come out of the shoulder, over-corrected and flipped over.
"It's rolled over a few times and landed on its roof."
Nearby resident Steve Young said: "My wife heard the bang and a little later I went outside to lock up the dogs and could see the police lights.
"I thought maybe one of our horses got out on to the road.
"This has come as a shock, especially after finding out how young they were.
"We have had a few bad crashes out here like the triple fatality involving the petrol tanker last year."
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
