WINDSOR has won the Nepean District Bowling Association third grade pennant.
Windsor played two games of bowls at the weekend, winning the rescheduled round eight match against Penrith on Saturday before losing the round 10 match against St Marys on Sunday.
The team only dropped two matches all season, winning eight games and finished with 16 points, four points clear of Penrith.
Team member Terry Flannigan said it was a great achievement for the club.
‘‘We’re only a little club here and we did quite well,’’ he said.
‘‘I think it is probably about seven years since the club has won a pennant.’’
Flannigan said the team now had to go on to the Zone Five Bowling Association play-offs, to be hosted in Portland over June 13 and 14.
‘‘We are looking forward to the zone play-offs and hoping to go right through,’’ he said.
With the third grade team having wrapped up the pennant, the attention will turn to sixth grade at the weekend.
Windsor’s sixth grade team will also play for the sixth grade pennant this Saturday against Hazelbrook, after winning its conference.
Grades five, six and seven are split into two groups, with the top teams from each playing off for the pennant.
Windsor’s fifth grade side was third in its conference, and the seventh grade side was second.
Flannigan said the finish for all sides was quite an achievement considering the size of the club.
Richmond Memorial Bowling Club had a team in fifth, sixth and seventh grade this season.
The fifth grade team was by far its most successful, finishing second in its conference.
The team was a chance to win its conference and then go to play for the pennant this weekend but it was not to be.
Windsor actually proved to be the thorn in Richmond’s side, as Windsor won at the weekend in the rescheduled round eight match.
Richmond’s Bruce Kirk said it was a tense match that was in the balance for the majority of the game.
Windsor’s win meant Richmond and Windsor finished on 12 points each, two behind Blacktown City, with 14.
The sixth and seventh grade teams for Richmond both finished on the bottom of their team pools.
Wisemans Ferry Bowling Club finished last in their fifth grade group.
