Have you seen the sign ‘This space has been beautified by WBP’ around Windsor?
If you have, you can thank six Windsor residents who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide random acts of ‘beautification’.
The ladies formed the ‘Windsor Beautification Project’ almost three months ago to make their home town shine.
They get together on a regular basis and discuss how they can clean up the town and inspire others to have pride in their area.
Group member Sophie Devine said Windsor was a beautiful town with great ‘bones and character’ but somehow it has seemed in decline.
‘‘Along the way somewhere, we have allowed a layer of grime to build up and have seen the presentation of parks and gardens decline,’’ Mrs Devine said.
‘‘We have met with Council and discussed concerns about the general lack of maintenance in the town. Although they acknowledged there is work to be done, they couldn’t commit the necessary funds.’’
Mrs Devine said this prompted the group to take action and, as proud residents, lead the way.
The ladies get their inspiration from other community-based groups, such as the volunteer gardeners in Kurrajong Village and the Windsor Rotary graffiti team.
‘‘We hope to emulate their success,” she said.
Another group member, Emma-Jane Garrow, said it’s all about the community and being part of something positive.
‘‘We live here and want to make sure that we preserve the sense of community that Windsor has always had for our kids,” Mrs Garrow said.
A Facebook page for the group has highlighted their random acts of beautification, including all manner of clean-ups and blitzes on public spaces.
One of the members, Abigail Ball, said the project was not designed to replace the Council-funded maintenance budget.
She said they just hoped to demonstrate what ‘good’ looks like, setting higher standards and encouraging residents to take ownership of their town.
